The script is being written: Denis Villeneuve admitted that he is working on “Dune 3” and what is the difference from the book

Director Denis Villeneuve revealed his vision of the character of Chani in the second part of the film “Dune”significantly different from the book version by Frank Herbert.

He also hinted at the role of Zendaya’s character in the third part, for which he is already writing the script. He said this in an interview with The New York Times.

According to Villeneuve, Herbert regretted that readers perceived the novel as a “celebration of Paul Atrid”, when in fact the writer wanted to warn against messianic figures and the combination of religion and politics. Therefore, in the second film, the director tried to be closer to the author’s original intention than to the book.

In the book, Chani is portrayed only as a follower of Paul, but in the film, Villeneuve made her disagree with his actions. This approach allows us to show the “dark” transformation of the main character from a different perspective – the same one that Herbert was striving for to warn the audience.

The director wanted to explore the idea that instead of freeing the Fremen, Paul Atrid actually enslaves them, seizing control and starting a war.

“It’s the tragedy of all tragedies. Like Michael Corleone in science fiction, he becomes what he wanted to avoid. And he will try to find a way to save his soul in the third part,” says Villeneuve.

For the third film, based on the book Dune Messiah, the director hinted at further developments in the storyline of Chani and her anger at Paul.

“I don’t want to reveal what I’m going to do with the third film. I know exactly what to do. But there’s a lot of firepower there and I’m very happy with this decision,” Villeneuve said.
