An expert center for the analysis of printed and electronic book publications, with the exception of textbooks, normative and official publications, began to function on the basis of the Russian Book Union (RBU). The main goal is to evaluate books for compliance with the law. According to the RKS, the center includes representatives of Roskomnadzor (RKN), the Russian Historical Society, the Russian Military Historical Society, the Russian Orthodox Church, the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Russia, the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia, the Russian Lawyers Association, the Russian Academy of Education, the Literary Institute. A.M. Gorky and other organizations.
The creation of such a body was discussed back in January 2023 at a meeting of representatives of publishing houses with the RKS and RKN. It is expected that the expert council will identify books subject to withdrawal from sale due to violations of laws, including the law banning LGBT propaganda.
Information about the launch of the expert center appeared after, on the recommendation of the expert center, the AST publishing group, part of Russia’s largest publishing group Eksmo-AST, temporarily suspended the sale of the novels by Vladimir Sorokin “Heritage”, Michael Cunningham “The House at the End of the World” and James Baldwin’s “Giovanni’s Room” The expert opinion indicated the presence of information prohibited for dissemination according to the law prohibiting the promotion of non-traditional sexual relationships and (or) preferences, gender reassignment.
