Stellantis has launched a project to convert vans into electric ones

It is reported that individuals who currently drive a mid-size diesel commercial vehicle from one of the Stellantis brands can convert that van to a fully electric commercial vehicle from next year. This could be a lifesaver for entrepreneurs who, for example, have to deal with increasingly strict environmental zones.

Stellantis itself has announced a conversion plan in 2022. At the same time, a collaboration began with the French Qinomic, which was supposed to lead to the creation of a package that would allow an existing diesel van to be equipped with an electric drivetrain. This product is expected to hit the market next year. We are talking about buses of a popular model range, internally called “K0”. It has been around since 2016 and currently consists of the Citroën Jumpy, Peugeot Expert, Opel Vivaro and Fiat Scudo models.

Whether it makes sense to convert an existing bus to an electric one obviously depends a lot on the price. According to the company’s management, the cost of the re-equipment will be at least less than 20,000 euros (2 million rubles, according to the current exchange rate). It’s certainly a lot of money, but it’s still cheaper than buying a brand new electric van.

By the way, from the outside it will not be clear whether the van has been converted to an electric car. Manufacturers can simply install an additional charging port while the fuel filler door remains in the same place, even if it is never used.
