The compact crossover MX-30 is not very successful, and Mazda already has a new model in this format on the way. Unveiled today in Beijing, the Arata is a concept showing what the electric crossover will look like when it arrives by the end of next year.

The star of Mazda’s Beijing stand is undoubtedly the rear-wheel drive EZ-6 electric sedan, but the Arata is also a head-turner. Like the EZ-6 sedan, the Arata is developed by the Changan Mazda joint venture. Most likely, a different name will be used for the production version, possibly alphanumeric, like other SUVs. The name “EZ-60” has already been patented in China, so it can be used for this car.

The Arata (meaning “new” or “fresh” in Japanese) is a striking electric crossover that could technically be related to an existing model in China. While the EZ-6 is a redesign of the Changan Deepal SL03, the EZ-60 is likely to be based on the Changan Deepal S7. But this will not just be a replacement of emblems, but serious changes in design. Models from Mazda will be more premium and richly equipped, and, therefore, will become more expensive than analogues from Changan.

The Arata is purely electric, at least for now, while the EZ-6 will also be sold with a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The crossover received a new variation of the familiar Kodo corporate design. Like the sedan, there is an illuminated radiator grille. The large Mazda lettering on the sides is also illuminated.

At the rear, a large spoiler, divided in the middle by a brake light, attracts attention.

Since it’s still a concept, it comes with cameras instead of regular mirrors and also lacks door handles and a rear wiper. But it is already known that the concept will turn into a production model by the end of 2025. And the EZ-6 sedan will go on sale this year.
