German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Germany is ready to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council. He added that the country is in favor of the reform of the UN Security Council and its expansion.
“I ask you to support our candidacy. The candidacy of a country that respects the principles of the UN and which stands for cooperation and participates in it,” Olaf Scholz said during a speech at the 77th session of the UN General Assembly (quote from Interfax).
“We must adapt our rules and institutions to the realities of the 21st century… This also applies to the UN Security Council. Germany has been advocating for its reforms and expansion for many years, primarily in order to include the countries of the global South into it,” added Mr. Scholz.
The question of a possible reform of the UN Security Council was raised in the spring of 2022 after the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine. In September, US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield reported that US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken was going to make proposals on reforming the UN Security Council at the 77th session of the General Assembly. French President Emmanuel Macron also called for a reform of the UN Security Council. Now five countries have the status of permanent members of the UN Security Council: Russia, the USA, China, Great Britain and France.
