Citizens of Ukraine may face criminal liability in the form of imprisonment for up to five years for participating in referendums on joining Russia. Iryna Vereshchuk, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, Minister for the Reintegration of Uncontrolled Territories, reported this to the Strana edition.
According to her, some lawyers believe that participation in referendums may fall under Part 1 of Art. 110 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine). This article provides for imprisonment for up to five years. Vereshchuk called on residents of territories not controlled by Ukraine not to go to referendums and “leave if possible.”
She also noted that the organizers of the referendums face five to ten years in prison with confiscation of property. Such a term of punishment is provided for under the law on the legal regime of wartime, which prohibits referendums on the territory of Ukraine.
On the eve it became known that the referendums on joining the Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics, as well as the Russian-controlled military units of the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions of Ukraine, will be held from September 23 to 27. The United States and the European Union (EU) called the upcoming referendums bogus and said they would not recognize them, while Ukraine promised to continue to “liberate its territories.” The EU also threatened the Russian Federation with new sanctions.
