Last week the Baltic Cultural Forum took place in Svetlogorsk. The important event brought together more than six hundred participants and a hundred speakers.

Saving ruins and rebates

One of the main events in the Amber Hall was the plenary session on the first day of the forum. It was attended by Russian Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova, Governor of the Kaliningrad Region Anton Alikhanov, Director of the Hermitage Mikhail Piotrovsky and other speakers.
“In our region, much attention is paid to the restoration of cultural heritage sites; many organizations, including volunteer ones, are engaged in this,” Anton Alikhanov said in his speech. – With one of them – the “Keepers of the Ruins” movement – this year we will implement the “Gothic Ring” project and allocate money for improvement. There is a regional program for the restoration of cultural heritage sites with very favorable conditions for investors (it is currently suspended due to too many applicants, but will be resumed. – Author’s note). A program for working with cultural heritage sites is also being prepared at the federal level. We are grateful to the Federal Ministry of Culture for their support in creating schools of creative industries in the Kaliningrad region. Such a school operates successfully in Gusev, and another one will appear in Sovetsk this year.
Expert platforms were dedicated to Russian theater abroad and the work of museums and collectors, librarianship, inclusion in culture, creative creative industries and other topics. The emphasis was also placed on regional film industries, the birthplace of which was our region. Programs for compensation of part of the costs of filming in the Kaliningrad region have been in effect since 2017. During this time, we have shot dozens of films and TV series, among the most sensational films are “Sea Devils” (16+), “Under the Laws of Wartime” (12+), “Nuremberg” (12+), “GDR” (18 +). Now regional authorities are considering the possibility of paying rebates to video game developers.

For the first time in Russian

As part of the 300th anniversary of Immanuel Kant and the 225th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Pushkin, the exhibition “Kant and Russian Culture” (6+) opened at the forum – a joint project of the State Museum of the History of Russian Literature named after V. I. Dal and the Kaliningrad Museum of Fine Arts.
“The exhibition talks about Kant’s ideas in Russian literature, the variety of readings of philosophical works by Russian classics – Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky and other writers,” said Galina Zabolotskaya, director of the Museum of Fine Arts.
The guests enjoyed the premiere of the street performance of the Kaliningrad Regional Drama Theater “DO NOT TURN!” (12+). And the presentation of the first edition of Kant’s “Physical Geography” in Russian – it is compiled from notes from listeners of Kant’s lectures, was published during the philosopher’s lifetime, and then was republished in Germany in 1905.
The opening date of the Tretyakov Gallery branch also became known at the forum. According to Anton Alikhanov, this will most likely happen in August. The first exhibition will include 300 works from the last 500 years – from icon painting to the avant-garde. They will bring Repin, Kandinsky, Malevich and other masterpieces.

New ideas and partners

Several cooperation agreements were signed at the forum: with the Znanie society and the National Center of Historical Memory. There was a discussion of the relationship between Russia and China in the cultural sphere.
“27 section meetings were held in the most important areas of development of culture and art, in which colleagues from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Serbia, and China participated,” Andrey Ermak, Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Kaliningrad Region, summed up the forum. – The fifth international conference “Russian Theater Abroad as an Institute of Russian Culture”, the Vakhtangov Festival of Theater Managers and much more took place. An innovation was an open lecture hall with speakers in various areas of culture, art and history. Many new ideas and future projects have emerged. And most importantly, as almost all participants noted, the forum still maintains a unique, friendly, informal atmosphere “without ties,” which only helps to work more efficiently. And we are already starting to prepare for the next Baltic Cultural Forum – in 2025.
