In the year of Valery Gavrilin’s 85th birthday, a solemn ceremony was held in Vologda The IX Governor’s International Youth Competition named after the composer opened. It brought together 174 participants from 24 regions of Russia, as well as from China, Turkey, Costa Rica, and the Republic of Belarus. Our region is represented by more than 40 performers from Vologda, Cherepovets, Veliky Ustyug, Chagodoshchensky, Syamzhensky, Kichmengsko-Gorodetsky, Nikolsky, Ust-Kubinsky municipal districts.

Valery Gavrilin wrote: “Vologda for me… is the place where I first became acquainted with life in all its manifestations… I compose and live only with what I was fed with as a child in my native land” The Gavrilinsky competition began to be held in the Vologda region shortly after the death of the composer – in 2001. Its goal was to identify and support truly talented young musicians – such as Valera Gavrilin, a nugget from the Vologda outback, an orphanage boy who graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory and became one of the most famous Russian composers of the 20th century.

The competition is held every three years and has rightfully established itself as one of the largest and most prestigious musical events in Russia. Gavrilin’s work, deeply Russian in spirit, is also in demand outside our country – this confirms the constant interest in the competition on the part of foreign performers. Valery Alexandrovich’s music contains our coded fundamental values, it is about you and me. We cherish the cultural heritage of the outstanding composer as the apple of our eye and are proud that he is ours, from Vologda. It is joyful that after the forced remote format in 2022, the competition returned to the usual rhythm of live auditions. The days from April 24 to 27 will be full of musical experiences for participants and jury members. Musical tests in nine categories will be held in the halls of the Vologda College of Arts: piano, violin, cello, academic vocals, domra, balalaika, button accordion/accordion, pop music, composition“- shared the head of the Department of Culture and Tourism of the region Vladimir Osipovsky.

The performances of the participants will be assessed by an international jury chaired by Alexander Vershinin, a professor at the Moscow State Conservatory named after P.I. Tchaikovsky, professor at Kurashiki Sakuyo University (Japan, Okayama). The jury includes famous musicians, composers, professors from leading creative universities in Russia and foreign countries, many of whom are also members of the jury of the International Tchaikovsky Competition.

The holding of the Gavrilinsky competition gave impetus to the study and mass performance of Valery Alexandrovich’s works in various schools and institutions. The competition is aimed at popularizing the composer’s creative heritage, identifying young talented musicians, improving their professional skills, consolidating the best traditions of music pedagogy and disseminating progressive teaching methods. Previously, only students from art schools and students from secondary specialized educational institutions of culture took part in it. Starting this year, students from higher educational institutions of the country joined them. And this is a new serious level for us“- noted the director of the Vologda Regional College of Arts Lev Trainin.

The first auditions begin tomorrow at 10:00. Vladimir Levin, a student at the Oryol Music College, is in excited anticipation. He will demonstrate his skills in the “pop music” category: “I am happy to be among the participants in the competition. I study with the Honored Artist of the Russian Federation Evgeniy Petrovich Derbenko – he was the first to open the door to the professional stage for the accordion. The program that I will perform in Vologda will also include his works.”.

The premium prize fund of the competition is 3,750,000 rubles and is distributed for each individual nomination and age group. Prizes for the laureates of the competition and teachers who trained the laureates of the competition are paid in each nomination and age group. The five best accompanists of the competition and eight participants of the competition are also awarded prizes for the best performance of a work by Valery Gavrilin.

The winners of the competition will be able to subsequently apply for grants from the President of the Russian Federation.

The winners’ concert will take place during the closing ceremony of the competition on April 27 in the large hall of the Vologda College of Arts. Starts at 15:00.

The competition is taking place for the first time without Natalia Evgenievna Gavrilina. The composer’s widow passed away in March of this year. For more than a quarter of a century after the death of her husband, she was engaged in preserving and popularizing his creative heritage, publishing his works, and perpetuating his memory. She constantly came to Vologda, was reverent about Valery Alexandrovich’s small homeland – his native place of childhood, the village of Perkhurevo in the Vologda District, the village of Kubenskoye.
