Russia has quite a successful experience of uniting regions, and there is a group of regions that need consolidation, the time for this will come, Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko said today, April 24, in an interview with RIA Novosti.

“I won’t name the regions, but, of course, there is a group of regions that, in my opinion, simply need to be consolidated, unified, so that they complement each other economically and socially. The time will come for this” – she said.

Matvienko emphasized that this issue must be approached thoughtfully, there must be “scientific expert justifications with calculations, with the understanding that if two regions or three regions unite, the economic effect will be huge, the cumulative effect for people will be huge”. Then, in her opinion, “people will be happy to support this too”.

“We have positive experience – already in the new Russia – of uniting regions, and it is quite successful,” – said the speaker of the Federation Council.

She noted that the procedure for merging regions is quite complicated.
