Sailyugemsky National Park

The census of the number of snow leopards in Russia was organized by the Sailyugemsky National Park and the Interregional Association “Irbis”.

The leader in numbers was the Altai Republic with a record 54 snow leopards. In 2022 there were only 44.

Two years ago, at least 75 individuals were registered in Russia.

Director of the Sailyugem National Park Denis Malikov believes that the number of snow leopards in the Altai Mountains has increased due to an integrated approach to protection. Specialists conduct regular raids, improve the scientific base and quality of research, and conduct environmental education activities to instill respect for the predator among residents.

The increase in the number of individuals was also influenced by the lack of regional quotas for the production of Siberian mountain goats, the main prey of the snow leopard.

Earlier in Altai, snow leopards chewed up a camera trap.
