Antipas of Pergamon, whose memory is celebrated on this day, was a disciple of John the Theologian, bishop of the Pergamon Church.
According to the life, the pagans forced Antipas to stop preaching about Christ, but he refused. For this he was thrown into a red-hot copper ox in the temple of Artemis. Christians secretly buried the saint’s body, and in the 5th century they built a temple over his grave. The relics of Antipas are revered as myrrh-streaming, and his tomb has become a place of pilgrimage.
Antipas was popularly considered a healer of toothache. When a peasant had a toothache, they placed a silver coin on it, after a while they took it out of their mouth and made a hole in it. After this, the coin was hung on the icon of St. Antipas. According to legend, the pain should have subsided quickly.
Antipas was also called Vodogon – because on his day the flood was at its peak. People said: “Antipus clears the rivers of ice”; “Antip dissolved the water,” because by this time there were almost no ice floes left.
However, there were years when the rivers did not even open up on the day of Antipas – this promised a poor grain harvest and an unfavorable summer. If the water spread widely, one should wait for a fertile year: “If there was water, then bread would be born.”
We also monitored the weather that day. The rains foreshadowed that there would be a lot of mushrooms in the forest. And if frost hits, the milk mushrooms will come out abundantly.
On Antipas, the peasants never carried out field work – they did not sow seeds, they did not plant seedlings. This day was considered unfavorable for planting.
Among other things, it was believed that it was on Antipas that the bear leaves its den.
International Youth Solidarity Day
According to the decision of the World Federation of Democratic Youth, International Youth Solidarity Day is celebrated annually on April 24.
This memorable day serves as another reason to attract the attention of government agencies, society and the media to the problems of youth.
By the way, there is no generally accepted international definition of the age group of youth. For example, the UN defines “youth” for statistical purposes as persons aged 15 to 24 years, while in Russia youth is considered a socio-demographic group of persons aged 14 to 35 years inclusive.
According to the UN, there are currently more than 1.2 billion young people in the world – the largest generation of youth in history. Almost 90% of all young people live in developing countries, where they constitute a significant proportion of the population.
Is it easy to be young in modern society? It depends on the degree of unity of young people in solving their problems.
As for the traditions of this holiday, it used to be celebrated very widely. On International Youth Solidarity Day, youth congresses, concerts and other festive events were held, the program of which was carefully thought out. Their main goal was to emphasize the high goal of a friendly unification of peoples, collectivism, strengthen the unity of nations, demonstrate their desire to join forces in the fight for the rights of youth, and unite youth to solve their problems. But over the years, all this has practically faded away, and now this date is celebrated sporadically, as a rule, on the initiative and with the support of various youth and public organizations.
By the way, the youth of the planet have several more “their own” holidays – International Youth Day, World Youth Day and others, including national ones. For example, in Russia Youth Day is celebrated on the last Saturday of June.
