At the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia, the criminal case of the former assistant to the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the head of the St. Petersburg headquarters of the ministry Sergei Umnov, three other former police officers and five entrepreneurs accused of giving bribes worth almost 65 million rubles will be considered in Moscow.

The defense of the accused insisted on hearings in the Oktyabrsky District Court of St. Petersburg, the Prosecutor General’s Office suggested the Lefortovo Court of Moscow. As a result, the case was transferred for consideration to the Khamovnichesky District Court. The lawyers appealed the decision, but the dispute should be settled at a meeting on May 21.

11 people were accused of receiving 11 bribes on an especially large scale, but due to active repentance, the criminal prosecution of some of the defendants was stopped – the rest are under restrictions not to leave the place and proper behavior.

It is assumed that the organizer was Lieutenant General Sergei Umnov, who in 2013 attracted the rest of the defendants. According to investigators, the commission located branches in premises where they specialized in providing paid services for car registration.

The investigation began in June 2020, and on July 5 and 6, 2022, investigators detained the main defendants, Kommersant reports. At first they did not admit their guilt, since the decisions were collective and they did not enjoy any benefits.

Earlier, Petersburg Diary reported that the Investigative Committee accused the former head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of St. Petersburg of creating an organized crime group.
