Megafon was the first among cellular operators to develop Russian professional radio communications (trunking) for emergency services and companies. The solution operates on the LTE network, which allows rescue services, government companies and businesses not only to organize operational communication and coordination of actions, but also to determine geolocation and broadcast video. The Russian trunking service is also available through a cloud connection, which allows the customer to do without installing and maintaining additional equipment. PAI was informed about this by the company’s press service.

The project for completely domestic professional radio communications based on LTE was implemented by Megafon together with the Trialink company, which offers services within the RONET system. The corresponding contract was concluded at the beginning of 2024 and provides not only for the development of software for trunking, but also its subsequent maintenance and technical support.

The joint solution includes server and software, as well as the supply of subscriber devices with a PTT (Push-To-Talk) key, with one click of which you can call an individual subscriber or an entire group. We will operate such a connection in any place where there is LTE coverage. If the object is located outside such a zone, then the operator’s specialists deploy a network to organize trunking.

Trunking allows you to instantly connect with another subscriber or an entire group without the delay of dialing a number or waiting for an answer. This type of communication is especially in demand among emergency services and at various types of facilities: from hotels and security companies to sports stadiums with thousands of people and mining and processing plants. However, if previously trunking technologies only allowed voice communication, in recent years PoC (Push to Talk Over Cellular) systems connecting subscribers via a cellular network have become increasingly in demand. This opens up a wide variety of features for users, including file sharing, video streaming, and location tracking. Today, according to IAA Rustelecom, the Russian PoC market is the most promising and is growing in money by more than 60% per year.

Connection is possible in two formats: either the customer purchases communication devices and hosts servers for trunking, or connects to the operator’s servers through Megafon’s cloud technologies. With the second option, the customer saves on the installation of additional equipment and its maintenance, and all traffic is processed at Megafon’s facilities, which ensures the correct operation of subscriber gadgets. The new system is universal and can be seamlessly integrated with existing professional radio communication systems of previous standards.

“The tests have shown that, in terms of technical characteristics, the Russian solution for trunking is not inferior to foreign ones. In addition to operational voice communication, it gives the customer the opportunity to track the geolocation of all system participants in real time, instantly transfer files and photos, and even broadcast video in high definition – all this happens at speeds of up to 300 Mbit/s and over a secure mobile network,” explained Director for Corporate Business Development at Megafon Natalya Taldykina.
