A fire broke out in the apartment and drove them into a corner, but rescuers arrived and put out the fire.

The press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations told the story of the rescue of an Omsk resident Anastasia Shikova and her 11 year old son Artema. A fire in one of the apartments on the seventh floor of a nine-story building on Boulevard Street occurred on the night of February 28.

“I don’t know why I woke up, but in the darkness I saw a fire in the corridor. She jumped up and woke up her son. At first I thought we could get out through the front door, but the fire immediately spread along the walls and ceiling,” said the Omsk resident.

When it was impossible to leave the apartment, the woman took her son out to the balcony and closed the door behind him so as not to create an influx of oxygen. The Omsk resident moved into the kitchen and could no longer get out: the fire continued to spread.

“The flames were raging behind me, I opened the window and I don’t remember how I jumped from the windowsill to the balcony. At that moment, I didn’t think about myself, although the fire was already burning me greatly, I was thinking about my child, who stood alone and cried,” said the Omsk resident.

Almost immediately after the jump, the glass of the kitchen window was broken by flames. Anastasia grabbed the railing and told her son to climb over too. Eyewitnesses pulled a blanket under the windows and shouted for the mother and child to jump. However, by this time firefighters had already arrived at the scene and began to deploy the ladder truck. Omsk residents were saved.

That night, 34 rescuers and 8 fire engines extinguished the flames. Some firefighters worked inside, others outside. Hundreds of residents, including 15 children, evacuated to the street on their own. Another 23 people were trapped in the smoke and were waiting for help in their apartments.

The mother and boy were handed over to the doctors; both had inhaled smoke, and Anastasia also had severe burns to her body and upper respiratory tract. She stayed in the hospital for almost a month, after which she came to the unit to thank the rescuers.
