After the flood that hit the Russian regions, the Hydrometeorological Center stated that dangerous traffic jams could also arise in Karelia, Leningrad and Pskov regions. On this score, hydrologist and chief researcher at the Institute of Water Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Mikhail Bolgov, said that floods could also hit Moscow and St. Petersburg, Gazeta.ru reports.

According to the scientist, ice breakup has not yet reached Karelia, the Leningrad region and the Pskov region, but they can still break. Bolgov noted that such a scenario is possible if there is a sharp influx of warm air, which will cause snow to melt. The break of strong ice, the hydrologist warned, is fraught with the formation of jams, which the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia warned about.

“In this case, sudden flooding may occur. There is such a possibility, but there are also many factors that we cannot take into account, so it is difficult to predict anything,” the expert explained.

Flooding may also occur in Moscow, Bolgov warned. According to him, 25 cases of flooding in the capital have been recorded in history, and it cannot be ruled out that a similar story could repeat itself again.
