On April 24, the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg adopted in the first reading a bill that establishes the official status of the symbol of feat of the residents of besieged Leningrad – an olive-colored ribbon with a green stripe in the middle.
“It so happened that some part of history is recorded in official documents, including laws, while some remains in the memory of generations. Residents of the city cherish St. Petersburg traditions <...>, honor the official historical symbols of our city <...>. But there are unofficial symbols and traditions, including those associated with the Great Patriotic War. <...> There are also purely Leningrad and St. Petersburg ones. For example, the so-called blockade ribbon, which has become a symbol, a link between older and younger generations of citizens,” said Smolny’s representative in the Legislative Assembly, Konstantin Sukhenko.
He recalled that the blockade ribbon, along with the St. George ribbon, has been used for decades both in official events and unofficially by city residents.
