Over the past year, trams derailed 27 times in Samara. There have also been several cases this year. The head of the transport department, Sergei Markin, spoke about the causes and solution to the problem.
“Among the reasons is the condition of the tracks: constant widening of the track, defects in the sleepers. The infrastructure needs to be improved. Starting April 28, we begin to repair the rails on Novo-Sadovaya. This street was chosen because it carries the maximum number of passengers,” said Sergei Markin at a meeting of the City Duma Committee on the development of urban infrastructure, housing and communal services and the environment.
According to him, in the future, tram tracks also need to be updated on Bezymyanka, Novo-Vokzalnaya and Tashkentskaya streets. The last place to change the rails will be in the historical center.
Residents will have to endure some inconvenience due to the renovation work. For example, tram traffic will be closed on Novo-Sadovaya. As compensation, buses will be launched – travel will be free.
