The ambulance station talked about how they managed to save a patient with a severe allergic reaction. It was caused by an antibiotic that the girl took. A severe allergic reaction developed instantly, but the relatives managed to call an ambulance in time.

An emergency medical team consisting of paramedic Tatyana Fitisova, nurse Anastasia Pavlova and driver Vladimir Zhuravlev arrived at the scene of the call within 10 minutes. Doctors provided first aid to the girl and took her to the hospital.

The regional health department reminds that antibiotics can cause more than just a severe allergic reaction. The chief freelance infectious disease specialist at the Department of Health, Victoria Adonyeva, calls self-medication with antibiotics the most common mistake made by patients.

It must be remembered that antibiotics are not universal and not harmless. Each drug in this class has its own spectrum of action and acts only on certain microorganisms that are sensitive to it. The doctor’s task is to determine clear indications for the antibiotic so as not to prescribe it in vain.

Self-prescription of an antibiotic “just in case” aggravates the global problem of antibiotic resistance. This is when a pathogenic bacterium develops drug resistance to an antibiotic, which means the drug simply won’t work on it next time.
