State Duma deputy Anatoly Vyborny, together with residents and activists of United Russia, held a cleanup day at a bunker preserved from the times of the Great Patriotic War in the Pokrovskoye-Streshnevo area.

“In the entire North-Western District of Moscow, only two such bunkers have survived to this day – “long-term fire emplacements” on the defense line. I would like to pay tribute to the regional veterans’ organization, residents and activists who take care of the memorial. And also the policy of Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin to preserve such historical objects. Today in the capital there are more than 4,000 monuments, memorial plaques, memorial places dedicated to war heroes,” noted Anatoly Vyborny.

The bunker is located right in the courtyard of the house at the beginning of Vodnaya Street. Previously, because of the parked cars, rarely anyone noticed him, residents said. But now the memorial has been fenced off and paved over.

According to local historians, previously from this place the machine gunner had a view of the Khimka River, and he fired, preventing the Nazis from crossing from the opposite bank. They say that somewhere in these same places at the beginning of the 17th century, Russian troops defeated the Polish-Lithuanian invaders led by False Dmitry II – aka the “Tushinsky thief”.

“This bunker was abandoned for a long time, and only recently it was improved. But despite the care of the memorial, time and Moscow winters pose a challenge – in the spring there are many fallen leaves and the paint has faded. Today they put the memorial in order. I am very glad that people responded and came out in unison. We made this corner of the city more beautiful during the community cleanup and expanded our knowledge with new local history stories. The emotional impulse was doubly patriotic – they honored the memory of the heroes and contributed to the preservation of history,” said the deputy.

This corner of Moscow is also interesting because of the oak monument, which was planted in memory of the workers of the Tushino wool spinning factory, who volunteered to defend the approaches to the capital.
