The St. George Ribbon traces its history from the ribbon to the soldier’s Order of St. George the Victorious, established on November 26, 1769 by Empress Catherine II. The colors of the ribbon are black and orange (yellow), meaning “smoke and flame”, and are a symbol of military valor and glory. In 1806, the award St. George banners were introduced into the Russian army. Since 1917, the tape has been banned. It was revived only in 1941 in orange and black and under the name “Guards Ribbon”. During the Great Patriotic War, in continuation of the military traditions of the Russian army, the Order of Glory of three degrees was established. Its status, as well as the yellow and black coloring of the ribbon, was reminiscent of the St. George Cross. In addition, on May 9, 1945, the medal “For Victory over Germany” was established with an award block from the Order of Glory, made in the colors of the St. George Ribbon. On March 2, 1992, by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the RSFSR “On State Awards of the Russian Federation,” it was decided to restore the Russian military Order of St. George and the “St. George Cross” insignia. Since 2022, the St. George Ribbon has been protected by law. It was recognized as one of the symbols of Russia’s military glory. This symbol unites generations and is associated with pride in the defenders of the Fatherland, both past and present.
