At Orenburg State University, students from the Department of Geography and Regional Studies of the Institute of Geosciences watched a documentary film created by the Russian Geographical Society, “Geographers for the Great Victory.”

Geographers are unknown heroes of the Great Patriotic War. They were rarely remembered in times of peace. But in wartime, without their knowledge, victory was impossible. Topographers drew maps and told the artillerymen where to shoot. Hydrologists helped the infantry cross rivers and tanks through the swamps. Meteorologists compiled a weather forecast and helped the commander choose the day of the offensive. The Great Patriotic War became a war in which peaceful geosciences became a special type of weapon.

The film presents the exploits of the “geographical special forces” – meteorologists, hydrologists, topographers, surveyors, geomorphologists and other specialists who helped build the “Road of Life”, hold a military parade on Red Square in November 1941, and organize the storming of Berlin.

Organizers of the event: Orenburg regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society, Youth Club of the Russian Geographical Society “Orenburg Region” and the Institute of Earth Sciences of Orenburg State University.
