Specialists of the chemical-toxicological research department of the Orenburg branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Center for Grain Quality Assessment” within the framework of state control, in one sample of artificially grown rainbow trout coming from Kyrgyzstan, discovered the presence of triphenylmethane dye – crystal violet, which is a violation of the requirements of the Technical Regulations of the Customs Union TR CU 021/2011 “On food safety”.

Information about the detection of a dye that does not meet the safety indicators in imported fish was entered into the Vesta automated laboratory research recording system and sent to the Rosselkhoznadzor Office for the Orenburg Region.

Malachite green and crystal violet dyes are recognized by scientists as carcinogens that can increase the likelihood of tumors. Crystal violet has antibacterial, antifungal and anthelmintic properties and is used by aquaculture producers.

Experts believe that the use of dyes in aquaculture is possible only if manufacturers comply with the deadlines for their removal from the fish’s body. At the same time, the removal period of these dyes is quite long – in trout it is 9-10 months. Despite the potential risks, fisheries continue to use such dyes because of their high effectiveness in treating fish diseases that cause serious economic damage. These diseases include saprolegniosis, gyrodactylosis, and trichodinosis.

In total, since the beginning of 2024, as part of state control, 17 trout samples have been examined in the testing laboratory of the Orenburg branch using high-performance liquid chromatography with mass spectrometric detection for the presence of dyes, and one positive result was revealed.
