Residents of the Volgograd region were impressed by the unusual natural phenomena that occurred on April 24 over the surface of the Volga, or more precisely, over the Volgograd reservoir in Kamyshin. Photos of the frightening tornado instantly spread across social networks and public pages.

The huge atmospheric vortex caught the eyes of hundreds of eyewitnesses. One of them, larger in size, descended from the cloudy sky approximately in the middle of the reservoir, and several others, smaller ones, were observed closer to the city of Nikolaevsk.

As a rule, atmospheric vortices arise in a thundercloud and spread downwards, often to the very surface of the earth. They represent a cloud arm or so-called trunk with a diameter of tens and hundreds of meters.

But the word “tornado” comes from the Old Russian smirch, meaning “cloud, black cloud.” This word is related to words with roots “merk” and “darkness”.

People say that after such whirlwinds, rains of fish or algae fall somewhere, since the funnel literally sucks water from the water surface.

Earlier it was reported that a pillar of fire across the Volga on the territory of Krasnoslobodsk again frightened Volgograd residents.
