Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov, speaking in the Federation Council, promised to bring to justice all those responsible for large-scale damage from floods in the regions of Russia.

In the Orenburg region, 12 municipalities in 61 settlements and 43 SNT are currently flooded. There are 12,202 residential buildings (including 34 apartment buildings) and 19,556 household plots under water.

According to Krasnov, the main task at present is to provide assistance to those affected by water and eliminate the negative consequences, TASS reports.

“In the future, we will definitely ensure that all those responsible are held accountable,” he said.

The Prosecutor General cited the failure to use the hydrological network to create flood forecasts as one of the reasons for the flooding of populated areas.

— Of the 1 thousand automated complexes and posts of the hydrological network, a fifth were not working at the time of inspection in 2023. No means of measuring water flow were used when forecasting floods, the publication quotes the head of the department.

In January of this year, Igor Krasnov demanded that the heads of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Roshydromet eliminate the violations, but the measures taken turned out to be ineffective.

According to the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, the lack of reliable information about water inflow indicators at a crucial moment did not prevent global flooding of territories and became one of the causes of the emergency, which resulted in tens of thousands of people suffering.

“Their property and economy suffered significant damage, which has yet to be assessed. I reported the situation to the head of state,” Krasnov said.

Let us remind you that the flood of 2024 is called one of the largest in the history of observations and the most serious since 1957. In total, 89 square kilometers of the city area were flooded in Orenburg during the flood days. This is about a third of the entire territory. More than 6,500 households were affected. The water entered several multi-storey blocks.
