The event took place on the eve of a symposium dedicated to the development of bilateral cooperation in the field of surgery between St. Petersburg and Samarkand.

Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg Oleg Ergashev was awarded the title of honorary professor of Samarkand State Medical University. This was reported by the press service of Smolny.

The event took place on the eve of the symposium “St. Petersburg-Samarkand: modern approaches in practical surgery”, dedicated to discussing the development of bilateral cooperation between St. Petersburg and Samarkand in the field of healthcare.

At a meeting of the council, the rector of a university with almost a century of history, Zhasur Rizaev, presented Ergashev with a diploma and the robe of an honorary professor of his university.

— For St. Petersburg, cooperation in the field of healthcare with the Republic of Uzbekistan and, above all, with Samarkand and Tashkent is of priority importance, and we are ready to increase the pace of interaction. The most important aspect of our interaction is cooperation in the field of secondary and higher education. Thus, in 2023, almost 6 thousand students from Uzbekistan studied in higher educational institutions of the city, which shows the high demand for education in our city,” the vice-governor noted.

In his speech, Ergashev also recalled the times of the Great Patriotic War, when it was on the basis of SamSMU that the Military Medical Academy, evacuated from Leningrad, continued to work.

Previously, at a closed meeting, St. Petersburg deputies decided whether to award the titles of honorary citizens in 2024.
