Rostov region, April 25, 2024. DON24.RU. According to the folk calendar, today is the day of Vasily the Steamer. If by this day the sun had dried well and warmed the earth, then they expected a rich harvest and began to make beds. The abundance of cobwebs on bushes and trees was considered a sign of approaching hot weather. Rain today promises the same dampness and bad weather in the first days of May.
They tried to go to church on Vasily. At the entrance to the temple, three beggars were treated to rich pastries, and on the way out they were given money. It was believed that such an act would bring prosperity and good luck. Also on this day we went to the bathhouse. They hovered well with a broom for the sick and old people – they drove out the disease. After the bath, they were sure to put on clean clothes. On this day, special attention was paid to domestic animals and poultry. They were fed, cleaned, combed so that the farm would be healthy and produce good offspring. But they were careful of wild animals on Vasily. For example, meeting a hare was considered a harbinger of unpleasant events. For fear of meeting bears, we did not go into the forest. Our ancestors believed that predators were hungry on this day and could attack an uninvited guest.
