Confessions of electric scooter lovers from Volgograd

--

Fans of electric scooters from Volgograd decided to respond to pedestrians who hate them and call for a ban. What came out of this – read in the Notepad material.

With the onset of warmer weather in Volgograd, a new round of dissatisfaction with electric scooters began, along with new road accidents and resulting proposals for strict bans. We talked about this topic in some detail, but it always turned out that only pedestrians took part in the discussions, and the electric scooters themselves preferred to remain silent. We are correcting this and trying to reconcile the two sides.

Alexey, 33 years old, works in logistics

I have my own electric scooter for many years now. I read a lot of comments from pedestrians, laughed, and sometimes even cried. But let’s start with the fact that there is literally no infrastructure at all. Where do we have bike paths? In the center and the embankment, and yes, even from the train to Avangard, funny.

I ride around the Krasnoarmeysky district to and from work. I have a license, I have a car, but I still choose a scooter, since it is the best against traffic jams. The bridge over the canal stands in the morning, evening, afternoon and sometimes at night. I drive on the sidewalk, along the side of the road, and cross pedestrian crossings on foot. And on my route I often walk, since it’s too crowded for two pedestrians on the Marisky Bridge, not to mention I’m still trying to catch up. I even let pedestrians pass at crosswalks.

I’m in the center – along the bike paths on the embankment with my wife and child, they each have their own electric scooter. There have never been any conflict situations, since I follow the rule that the pedestrian on the sidewalk has priority, not me. I often walk part of the route dismounted. Yes, I think I’ll say hello to the people who walk along the bike paths in the center, there’s even a sign for you there.

Polina, 22, self-employed remotely

Electric scooters are very convenient for moving around the city. They often get to places where public transport does not go. A couple of times the scooter came to the rescue at night, when transport was no longer running. Thanks to the scooter, I got to the stop with a heavy package. Sometimes we ride in the evenings with friends, it’s an extremely fun activity.

I think this is an ideal option if you don’t have a license or a car. Electric scooters are also cheaper to rent than taxis.

Pedestrians are adequate, I didn’t hear any comments or negative shouts in my direction. But for some reason they always walk on bike paths.

Sergey, 41 years old, engineer

I sometimes ride an electric scooter myself. To be safe, everyone needs to have brains! Two or three people cannot ride at the same time on one unit. There is no need to race and do different tricks. There are separate scooters and special places for stunts. You must drive along special paths (although pedestrians sometimes walk along them and do not notice them), cross the road after dismounting and making sure it is safe. Drivers, scooter riders, and pedestrians need to be more attentive. And as a form of transport, a scooter is excellent. You need to turn on your head and concentrate on road events. It’s not the transport’s fault, it’s the driver’s.

Anastasia25 years old, mother of two children and housewife

We recently purchased this vehicle. It is very convenient and saves time and money. The only thing that upsets me is the quality of the sidewalks. I follow traffic rules when traveling, I dismount at pedestrian crossings, when I drive in courtyards and see small children, I also walk. It’s disappointing that many people have bad impressions of electric scooters. Not all of us are scoundrels who drive like crazy and don’t respect other road users. There are villains among pedestrians, drivers and electric scooters. But we shouldn’t judge everyone by isolated cases.

Marina, 35 years old, manicurist

Not all of us electric scooter riders are scum. Pedestrians in the comments shout about this so loudly, as if traveling on a scooter with a motor is a mortal sin, and walking on your own two feet automatically makes you a righteous person. I believe that those who are dissatisfied with this method of transportation are, in principle, dissatisfied with everything in life. Or you can also ride with the breeze, but there is no money for it. Cases of collisions with pedestrians are rare and occur for various reasons. For some reason, pedestrians live in the belief that people on electric scooters are always to blame, although even in accidents with cars there is such a thing as the pedestrian’s fault. There are rules for using scooters and almost everyone follows them, but there are plenty of inappropriate ones everywhere. I wonder if they are in favor of banning cars – after all, there are so many accidents… In Volgograd, electric scooters exist on a small piece of land in the center, where you can find good sidewalks. The main part of the city is free from these units – please walk there if you really want peace, quiet and tranquility.
