The exhibition “Earthly/Heavenly” by People’s Artist of Russia, member of the Moscow Union of Artists Igor Orlov opened in the Korbakov House. The painter visited Vologda more than once – his works participated in collective exhibitions held by the art gallery. However, the author’s personal exhibition was presented in the regional capital for the first time – it included 77 paintings and sketches.

Igor Orlov adopted the best traditions of the masters of Russian and world art and for more than half a century has been creating his own unique world, filled with light and love for nature. His artistic style is in touch with the tradition of romanticism and at the same time reveals a unique metaphorical perception of nature. For this vision, the artist is considered one of the “romantics of realism.”

Igor Orlov’s works are kept in the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum, the Moscow Art Prima Gallery, the Volga Art Gallery, the Omsk Museum of Art, the Arkhangelsk Art Gallery, and in private collections in Russia and abroad.

Despite his venerable age – 88 years – the artist paints every day and travels to his studio on the other side of the city. He is already planning summer trips to his favorite places to discover them from a new side and feel the tranquility of the world around him. The route includes the village of Ordynok in the Tver region, the village of Kolobovshchina in the Kirov region, Kirzhach in the Vladimir region, and Valdai (the village of Baynevo) in the Novgorod region. Vologda residents will see landscapes from these places in the Korbakov House. Here are collected works created over the past 25 years, including paintings from this year.

The artist’s canvases are unusual: the serenity and beauty of life on the canvas seem to be under threat, shrouded in a premonition of something bad. There is a light on in the cozy window, but it is surrounded by thick darkness, and it is difficult not to pay attention to it. The artist shows how important it is to appreciate every happy moment; for him, light is a symbol of calm, warmth, hope, and it must be protected.

My main theme is the admiration of God’s peace. I try to embody two principles in my work: on the one hand, to show the perfection of the surrounding world, and on the other, the fragility of this harmony, the premonition of an impending catastrophe. Ever since my wartime childhood, I realized that there is a very fine line, and everything beautiful can be destroyed in an instant“, noted Igor Orlov.

The curator of the exhibition, art critic Irina Balashova, said that the gallery had been dreaming of a personal exhibition of the author since 2006. “The artist works masterfully and figuratively. He even came up with his own genre – combining landscape, interior and still life. For example, we see a house with a window where a lampshade shines, and with this lighting the walls “dissolve” and the world “floats”, soaring in an amazing landscape. The artist combines reality and fantasy

The exhibition “Earthly/Heavenly” can be visited until May 26 (Vologda, Oktyabrskaya St., 13). Entry by ticket. The Pushkin card is valid.
