A resident of Buryatia, who tried to go to Ukraine to fight against Russia, was sentenced to 10 years. The verdict was handed down in Kuzbass, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the press service of the FSB Directorate for the Kemerovo Region.
According to the intelligence service, a 26-year-old resident of Buryatia had been in contact with a resident of Ukraine since last spring and was planning to participate in hostilities on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. He motivated this by the fact that since the beginning of the Northern Military District he has not supported the policies of the Russian leadership.
– For these purposes, the convict purchased military equipment via the Internet (body armor, helmet, uniform, various chevrons, flags of Ukraine and the Ukrainian paramilitary force). The man was an adherent of the ideology of terrorism, the report says.
The agency adds that the criminal posted the symbols of a terrorist organization on a social network in order to popularize its activities.
– To confirm his intentions, the man personally filled out a form to join a foreign paramilitary organization. While transiting through the territory of the Kemerovo region, the man was detained by special services officers, the FSB noted.
The agency clarifies that the court found him guilty of preparing for high treason in the form of going over to the enemy’s side, publicly justifying and promoting terrorism, as well as preparing to participate in the activities of a terrorist organization. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison with a fine of half a million rubles.
The man will serve his sentence for the first three years in prison, with subsequent imprisonment in a maximum security colony.
