As Andrey Dugin, head of the MTS RED cybersecurity services center, explained, recently there has been an increase not only in the duration and intensity of DDoS attacks, but also in the technical savvy of hackers. During a powerful cyber attack in March, they did not target arbitrary servers, but rather routers, in order to cut off access to the Internet for the maximum number of resources at once and lead to financial losses, customer outflow and damage to the company’s reputation.

According to Dugin, in the first quarter of 2024, telecommunications and IT companies became the most popular targets for hackers – they accounted for 39.5% of all repelled attacks. The public sector was in second place with 29.9% of attacks, and industrial enterprises were in third place with 9.3% of attacks. Criminals tried to harm banks least often – only in 1.7% of cases.

During the first quarter of 2024 in Russia, a subsidiary of a cellular operator in the field of cybersecurity repelled over 6,200 hacker attacks on client web resources. This is 1.5 more than for the entire second half of 2023. Siberia was one of the three leading regions – 12.5% of all incidents occurred here. Most often, Internet attackers attacked the Volga region.

The peak of DDoS attacks on company websites occurred in March, when 43% of the incidents from the quarterly figures occurred. Also in March, the longest attack was carried out: for 21 hours, hackers tried to bring down the website of a UAV manufacturer.

In the first quarter of 2024, the power record was broken among all previously repelled attacks on customer web resources. The most intense attack was 207 gigabits per second, which is twice the intensity of the previous most powerful incident. It happened in December 2023. A company in the Central Federal District became the target of hackers.
