Governor of the Irkutsk region Igor Kobzev stated the need to increase the tourist attractiveness of Irkutsk. He stated this while speaking at the city mayor’s report. Ruslana Bolotova.

– Irkutsk is the capital of Eastern Siberia, the gateway to Lake Baikal, the flow of tourists from other regions is growing at a significant pace, and Irkutsk airport is a leader in increasing passenger traffic in Russia according to the results of last year. After Covid restrictions, the number of foreign guests began to increase – and their first impression of the city is very important.

Some things are already being done for this. In particular, as Ruslan Bolotov mentioned earlier, tourist navigation has been updated and a number of historical buildings on the central street of the city have been illuminated.

“I think it’s necessary to make high-quality lighting in all the churches of the city,” added Igor Kobzev.

He also noted that throughout the region, including Irkutsk, it is planned to restore a large number of monuments dedicated to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War by May 9, 2025.

Igor Kobzev added that in Irkutsk it is necessary to repair building facades, remove garbage, reconstruct roads and create a transport interchange. Among the priority objects are the reconstruction of the Lermontovskaya interchange, the organization of through passage along Piskunova, the improvement of the area near the airport, the solution to the issue of entry from Shelekhov, the situation at the railway station.

– Under the national project “Safe Quality Roads,” our region will receive 1.5 billion rubles this year, of which 45% will be allocated to the regional center. We are ready to increase funding for these purposes, but we demand quality execution. It is necessary that comprehensive work be carried out on all main streets – repair of the roadway, sidewalks, communications, stopping points, and so on. So that it doesn’t happen as people say now: today they lay asphalt, which means tomorrow the pipes will be laid.
