Electricity exports from Russia in the first quarter of 2024 decreased by 20.2%, to 2.065 billion kWh, Inter RAO reports. As the company explained, the main reason was the reduction in supplies to China and Georgia from the second half of 2023.

Electricity imports to the Russian Federation from January to March decreased by 39.5%, to 321 million kWh, mainly due to a reduction in the volume of deviations from planned flows with Kazakhstan.

Inter RAO’s export revenue increased by 29.1%, to 6.8 billion rubles.

“The increase in export revenue is primarily due to supplies to Kazakhstan in order to cover the deficit and an increase in the volume of commercial flows,” the company explains.

As a member of the board of Inter RAO reported at the end of March, in January-February the company reduced electricity exports to China by 75%. From November 9, 2023, supplies along the 500 kV Amurskaya-Haihe line ceased. To turn on this line, a supply of at least 75 MW is required, however, due to restrictions in the Far East due to increasing energy consumption, low water availability and the high level of accidents of generating equipment, System Operator does not give permission for supply.

In 2023, Inter RAO reduced supply volumes to China to 3.1 billion kWh from a record 4.6 billion kWh a year earlier.
