The Hydrometeorological Service has one of the longest histories in the world. The service dates back to the formation on April 13 (26), 1834, by Decree of Emperor Nicholas I, of the Normal Magnetic Meteorological Observatory at the Mining Institute in St. Petersburg, which united all the stations and observatories then available.

On the territory of Karelia, meteorological observations began in the mid-19th century: in Kem (1838), Petrozavodsk (1857), and later in Sortavala, Padanakh, Pudozh, Povenets.

Currently, there are 125 observation units of the Hydrometeorological Service operating in Karelia, carrying out meteorological, radar, hydrological, aerological, agrometeorological, and actinometric observations. Monitoring of pollution of atmospheric air, surface water bodies, snow cover and precipitation, hydrobiological and radiometric observations is carried out.
