Foreign students will try to surprise Novgorod residents with national cuisine

In the new building of NovSU on Kolmovskaya embankment, in the cafe “Block Power”, a National Cuisine Festival will be held on April 27.

Five student teams representing China, Kyrgyzstan, India, Iraq-Kurdistan and Armenia) will prepare their national dishes. According to the competition regulations, it should be a main course and a dessert. After cooking, they are brightly and colorfully presented and served to the jury (and guests), accompanying the action with the history of the dishes and interesting facts about the culture of their countries.

Note that Iraqi Kurdistan is not a state generally recognized by the world community; it is a region in the north of Iraq that has the status of broad autonomy. The only country that officially supported the referendum on the independence of the Iraqi Kurds is Israel. It is believed that the most popular dish in everyday life of the Kurds is khashlama: boiled meat with broth in which potatoes, herbs, tomatoes, and spices are boiled. However, it is also considered a national dish in Armenia.

The composition of the jury is known: Vice-Rector for Youth Policy of NovSU Olga Kalpinskaya, Vice-Rector for External Relations and International Activities of NovSU Anastasia Novikova, Director of the cafe “Power Block” at Valdai Information Technology Center Pavel Chikov, Chairman of the Student Council of NovSU Anastasia Demidova and Lyudmila Zelenkina – ex-organizer Festival of national cuisine as part of the activities of NovSU.

The national cuisine festival is intended to help in the adaptation of foreign students of NovSU, improve the quality of intercultural relationships and increase students’ awareness of the possibilities of cultural interaction.
