Tomsk authorities refused to hold fireworks in honor of Victory Day on May 9. This is due to the fighting between Russia and Ukraine.

Earlier it was reported that the city authorities are preparing to celebrate the 79th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. According to tradition, on May 9, a rally-parade will be held in Tomsk, there will be an exhibition of old military equipment, and interactive platforms. The fireworks were not known the day before.

“There are no plans to hold a fireworks display on May 9, since this is inappropriate during the SVO,” the Tomsk administration told the vtomske.ru editors on April 25.

According to the administration, on May 9, Tomsk will host the Peace Mile race, laying flowers at the Memorial of Military and Labor Glory of Tomsk residents, a rally parade, and concerts; During the day, interactive platforms will operate on Novosobornaya Square.

Recently it also became known that there will again be no mass march of the “Immortal Regiment” throughout the country in 2024. This was explained by “existing threats to public safety.” The administration of the Tomsk region invited Tomsk residents to join the action in other ways – by placing portraits of “participants of the Great Patriotic War, home front workers, heroes of a special military operation” on their cars, clothes, changing their avatar on social networks.

Let us add that in 2023 there were no fireworks on Victory Day either. Then the authorities reported that they canceled it “on the recommendation of the security authorities.” In 2022, fireworks in honor of May 9 took place; thousands of Tomsk residents watched the show.

There were no fireworks in Tomsk on New Year 2024 either, but on the eve of the holiday, Mayor Dmitry Makhinya said: “We will hold fireworks, as expected, on public holidays – May 9, City Day.”
