The exhibition, which opened at the Simbirsk-Ulyanovsk Fire Department Museum, will be especially interesting for those who follow fashion trends and also want to figure out what kind of leather is best to buy handbags from.
The fashion for leather products is gaining momentum. Not only outerwear is welcome, but also leather accessories. Paying tribute to fashion, the Museum-Reserve “Motherland of V.I. Lenin” launched the exhibition “The World of Leather: Art and Craftsmanship” on the territory of the Simbirsk-Ulyanovsk Fire Department Museum. The new exhibition project is part of the large exhibition series “Through Fire,” dedicated to crafts that use high temperatures and open flames.

“Our museum, of course, talks about the fire profession, about destructive fire, but there is a series of our exhibitions about creative fire. It is fire and its power that is used in many industries, including manual and industrial leather processing.”
The exhibition presents items from the collection of the Museum-Reserve: women’s and men’s accessories, shoes, household items made using the technique of hot and cold embossing, perforation, appliqué. In addition, the exhibition introduces leather processing tools found during archaeological research.
The Ulyanovsk leather workshop was a partner of the exhibition. The company provided modern leather processing tools and samples of souvenir products.
Natalya ABAEVA – MANAGER OF THE LEATHER WORKSHOP OF THE CITY OF ULYANOVSK:
“In general, men do leather work, as you know. But we probably have the only workshop in Russia, perhaps even in the whole world, where only girls work. And with their fragile hands they make products, cut, sew, process by hand.”
The workshop manager told us what types of leather they use to make their products and how they differ. Thus, lamb skin lends itself well to draping, it is soft and light. Calf leather is also soft and beautiful, with an elegant texture. Buffalo leather is denser and scratch-resistant, while exotic leathers, such as python, have a beautiful textured surface. The workshop employee also suggested how to distinguish pig skin from calf skin. It turns out that pores are visible on the entire surface of the pig skin, there are small villi and a three-point pattern.
The exhibition also became a platform for a master class on making leather souvenirs using the embossing technique.
