During the month of tick activity in St. Petersburg, more than 70 people were bitten within the city. Moreover, almost half of the statistics were made by one district, the rest did not even come close to it.

From March 29 to April 25, 545 people, including 119 children under the age of 17, contacted medical organizations in St. Petersburg with tick bites, according to reports from the city department of Rospotrebnadzor. Moreover, over the last week, from April 19 to April 25, 285 people, including 55 children, applied.

Within the city limits, 77 bites were recorded within the month, 32 of them in the last week. The absolute leader in the number of cases was Pushkinsky district. If in the first weeks of April the statistics were even, then in the last weeks he sharply took the lead, and the number of people bitten exceeded a dozen per week.

In total, since March 29, 34 people have suffered from tick bites in the Pushkinsky district (16 of them in the last week). Next in the top is the Krasnoselsky district, where 8 cases were registered. 6 people were injured in Kurortny and Nevsky districts. There were three cases each in Kalininsky, Primorsky, Petrodvortsovoy, Krasnogvardeysky, Kronstadtsky and Frunzensky districts, two each in Moscow and Vyborgsky. Another case was registered in the Kirovsky district.

During the month, 10 cases of tick-borne borreliosis were recorded. No cases of tick-borne encephalitis have been reported. About 286 ticks were examined in laboratories for the presence of pathogens. The causative agents of encephalitis were found in eight, and borreliosis in 66. Another eight cases tested positive for human monocytic ehrlichiosis.

If bitten by a tick, you need to urgently go to the nearest emergency room. There, the bloodsucker will be safely removed and sent for examination, and the bite site will be treated. If you do remove the tick yourself, you need to do it very carefully so as not to tear off the proboscis. The tick must be grabbed as close to the oral apparatus as possible – with tweezers or fingers wrapped in clean gauze, then rotated around its axis, held strictly perpendicular to the surface of the bite, and removed from the skin.

It is enough to disinfect the bite site with any suitable product, and wash your hands thoroughly with soap. If a black dot remains at the site of the bite, that is, the head or proboscis still comes off, you need to treat it with a five percent iodine solution and leave it – the remains will be removed naturally. The extracted tick must be sent to the laboratory for examination.
