We bought garden plots for the soul, but it turned out we bought a swamp. Melt water does not want to leave the territory of gardening associations located in the area of Peat Lanes in Ivanovo. Gardeners believe that after human intervention, the ecosystem in their calm and green area is disturbed, and the city authorities allegedly do not take action. Garden plots in the area of Peat Lanes now more closely resemble a large swamp or plantations for rice fields. For the second year in a row, the place here is enchanted. They say you can forget about the harvest.

“Everything died. For example, on my plot, 10 roses, raspberries, blackberries died, basically everything that could die died.”

Summer residents, counting the damage, nervously joke, now we can swim among the gazebos. Instead of seedlings, we stock up on oars and inflatable boats. The snow has long since melted, but the vegetable gardens are still hidden under meltwater.
Lyudmila Myacheva: “We have water until mid-June. And we don’t have time to grow everything.”

Elvira Andreeva: “The raspberries are all wet. This means that the bushes are all in water. What is planted there before winter is garlic, well, many people plant carrots, we have a lot of flowers. We are no longer able to process or grow anything, but the flowers also all die. Everything gets wet.”

The flood reached the land plots of four SNT: “Trade Equipment Plant”, “Reinforced Concrete”, “Vendispaser” and “Druzhba”. The water level has risen so much that dozens of summer cottages have been flooded. The flood also changed the ecosystem here. SNT turned into a living corner.

Elvira Andreeva: “And ducks, even last year I myself saw northern ones on migration. They don’t just swim here, they dive. And muskrats of incredible size that eat everything there. They need to eat something.”

These gardening partnerships are more than 60 years old, gardeners say. Until the water supply was restored, there was a problem with life-giving moisture. Every spring, snow was collected in barrels for irrigation. After production buildings were built behind the quarries, dozens of vegetable gardens went under water, gardeners believe.

“They built some kind of factory there. And they fell asleep there. There was a way out. Because there is a trench there. And they fell asleep. And now the water doesn’t go away, so it stands here.”

Tamara Belyaeva: “As the men who have lived here for a long time say, there was even a drainage pipe with a diameter of a meter, which diverted excess spring water from the quarries to the central sewer somewhere. Apparently, the pipe was filled in, and we don’t know what happened. But now all these waters have poured into our areas instead of the central sewerage system.”

Last spring, gardeners say, the area was quickly drained. Some craftsmen came, did something, and the water from the areas quickly evaporated. This year, people also really hope for a miracle and a meeting with unknown specialists.
