In Sevastopol, the restoration of the monument to the “Hero City of Sevastopol”, known as “Bayonet and Sail,” has been completed. This was announced by the city governor Mikhail Razvozhaev.
As a RIA Novy Den correspondent reports, the monument, symbolizing the unity of the army and navy, was opened in 1977 at Cape Khrustalny, where during the Great Patriotic War the first fireworks were given in honor of the liberation of Sevastopol. The forty-meter stele made of monolithic reinforced concrete was lined with white Alma stone. Over time, the stone began to crumble, and a crack formed at the base of the stele, into which moisture entered. As a result, the structure became deformed.
Restoration began in March 2023. More than 731 million rubles were allocated for these purposes. The complex had to be in full accordance with its historical appearance and the surrounding area should be landscaped. The reconstruction was supposed to be completed by the end of the year, but the deadline was postponed several times.
Finally, the mayor announced the completion of the work: “They have completely put it in order, done the lighting. All bas-reliefs have been restored and so on. We plan to officially open this obelisk before the holiday,” Razvozhaev said.
By the way, cannons from the Alexander coastal battery, which was blown up during the Crimean War, appeared next to the obelisk. Several cannons survived – they were found during the construction of the monument 50 years ago and transferred to the Museum of the Defense of Sevastopol, and their cast copies were installed on the obelisk terrace.
