Construction of two underground pedestrian crossings began at the Moscow-Danube interchange in St. Petersburg. They will allow pedestrian and traffic flows to separate.
New underground passages will appear at the intersections of Moskovskoye Highway with Lensoveta and Zvezdnaya streets, the press service of the St. Petersburg administration reported on April 25. Construction and installation work is currently underway there: a foundation pit is being developed, a reinforced concrete foundation is being concreted, drainage and waterproofing are being installed. The crossings will be equipped with ramps and tactile tiles, and lifting platforms will be provided for people with limited mobility.
More than 10 thousand cars pass along the Moscow Highway every day, and it can only be crossed via above-ground controlled pedestrian crossings. “This slows down the speed of movement along the highway, and at night the road becomes less safe,” said St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov. Underpasses will eliminate the intersection of pedestrian and traffic flows.
The Moscow-Danube interchange should be completed in the fourth quarter of 2024. The total length of the new section, including the overpass and approaches to it, will be 1,460 meters. There will be sidewalks and a bicycle path, and pavilions will be installed at bus stops. Now the facility is 70% ready, all work is being carried out according to schedule, the city administration notes.
The interchange is being built as part of the federal national project “Safe Quality Roads.” This is one of the key facilities due to open this year. Last August, the Committee for the Development of Transport Infrastructure showed a timelapse of one of the most difficult stages of construction. Last February, a new stage of construction began at the interchange.
