In Sevastopol, the restoration of the famous monument “Bayonet and Sail” was completed by May 1

SIMFEROPOL, April 25 – RIA Novosti Crimea. In Sevastopol, on the eve of the May holidays, the restoration of the monument to the “Hero City of Sevastopol,” better known under the unofficial name “Bayonet and Sail,” was completed. The city governor, Mikhail Razvozhaev, announced this on STV.

“We have completed the restoration of the Bayonet and the Sail, one of the most significant obelisks in the city. We have completely put it in order, done the lighting. All the bas-reliefs have been restored, and so on. We plan to officially open this obelisk before the holiday.”

The obelisk at Cape Khrustalny, in the place where the first fireworks were given in honor of the liberation of Sevastopol, was opened in 1977. It symbolizes the unity of the country’s army and navy.

Restoration of the Bayonet and Sail memorial started at the beginning of last year; 731 million rubles were allocated for the work. The lion’s share of this amount was planned to be spent on restoring stone elements, bas-reliefs and strengthening the foundation, at the base of which there was a large crack. Over the years, moisture got into it, causing the structures to deform.

All work was planned to be completed by the end of 2023, but the deadlines were repeatedly pushed back. The entire range of work on the project, which was developed on the basis of archival materials, included not only the restoration of the historical appearance of the monument and the entire architectural group, but also the improvement of the territory. At the obelisk there were installed copies of the cannons of the Alexander coastal battery, which was blown up during the Crimean War.
