With the onset of spring, Nizhny Novgorod roads turn into a real obstacle course for motorists. Potholes that appear on the roadway can, at a minimum, lead to damage to cars, and sometimes to serious accidents. Correspondents of the news agency “In the City of N” assessed the condition of the roads of the Volga capital and found out where drivers should be especially careful.
One of the most problematic areas is the Myzinsky Bridge, or more precisely, the approaches to it. The coating on the crossing itself, which was overhauled five years ago, is worn out in places, but on the whole there are no serious defects observed. However, if you drive onto the bridge from the Karpov Church, the risk of your wheel falling into a hole increases many times over. In some areas, old “patches” are visible that hide previously appeared potholes, but they do not solve the problem.
As a result, traffic jams constantly occur at the crossing during peak hours. At the same time, motorists claim that there are no such potholes on any other bridge in Nizhny Novgorod. Repair of the roadway at this site is still ahead, but it may take several years.
Another busy highway, Lenin Avenue, is also not in the best condition. Potholes appeared in some places. True, the authorities promise to solve the problem in the near future. The section of the avenue from the State Railway Department to building No. 42 is already in the renovation plans for 2024.
Another problematic location, which received many complaints from motorists, was located at the exit from the Tsvety residential complex. Residents are forced to use the road passing by the Gazpromneft gas station because part of the new highway leading to Novaya Kuznechikha and Ankudinovsky Park has been blocked. Work is underway there to reconstruct underground communications, which will only be completed in July.
Residents of Nizhny Novgorod had to sit in traffic jams on a broken road and drive at a minimum speed to avoid getting into a hole. However, after numerous complaints, the road began to be repaired.
Previously, a failure appeared on Barrikad Street in the Sormovsky district. Before the pit was fenced off, a heavy truck managed to drive into it.
Things are no better in the city center. If the main highways there have been more or less put in order, then as soon as drivers turn onto adjacent streets, they again have to slow down to avoid hitting another pothole.
For example, on Fruktovaya Street in the Nizhny Novgorod region, a large sinkhole formed around a sewer hatch opposite the Ministry of Emergency Situations building. A temporary fence was placed near the hole and covered with car tires in order to somehow protect the drivers. Moreover, not only personal cars of Nizhny Novgorod residents travel here, but also public transport. This area is also scheduled to be renovated this year.
Usilova Street, located next to Fruitovaya, is literally completely buried in pits. Part of it was repaired last year, this year work will continue on the section to Kovrovskaya.
From year to year, problems arise on Alekseevskaya Street. Several years ago, an emergency occurred there: a bus wheel carrying tourists from Tatarstan fell into a hole on the road. Then there were no casualties, and the defect was promptly eliminated, but in other areas the potholes – albeit not so large, but noticeable – did not go away. Similar pits are observed on Gruzinskaya Street. The latter, however, the authorities promise to put in order.
At the end of March, a huge hole appeared in front of the Nebo shopping center on Lyadov Square. Repair work will be carried out by the owner of the well near which the failure occurred.
Potholes were also noticed near the underground passage closer to Gagarin Avenue. Currently, they are covered with asphalt chips, but our readers believe that this will not last long.
In the village of Vysokovo, where there is a turning point for several buses, the road is also far from in ideal condition. The potholes formed near the turn onto Ovrazhnaya Street, where cars usually drive at high speed.
Recently, the mayor of Nizhny Novgorod, Yuri Shalabaev, reported that 83% of city roads are in standard condition. At the same time, signals about the appearance of new holes on the roadway periodically come from all areas of the city. It cannot be said that the work to eliminate them is not being carried out at all: pothole repairs are carried out in the city every year, and in 2024 its volume will amount to 165 thousand square meters, which exceeds the level of 2023. Also, a number of problematic roads are being thoroughly restored. For example, the situation on the Moscow Highway has improved in recent years, although previously it was considered one of the pain points. There are still some potholes there, and repairs are planned to continue.
However, with enviable regularity, holes appear again and again. The mayor’s office sees several reasons for this: poor quality work of contractors, the influence of weather conditions, heavy equipment and heavy trucks that destroy the coating. For the latter, restrictions are usually introduced in the spring to minimize the load on the roadway when its strength is reduced due to waterlogging of the soil.
Due to the fact that the appearance of potholes is influenced by many factors, and different individuals and organizations bear responsibility for their occurrence, the problem must be solved comprehensively. The news agency “In the City of N” sent a request to the mayor’s office with a request to comment on the situation, inform about the measures taken and inform about the time frame for eliminating the failures.
