Deputies of the regional council at the regular 38th session unanimously decided to name the Zadonsk Polytechnic College after the twice Hero of the Soviet Union Mikhail Stepanishchev.

The famous pilot was born in the village of Pervoe Kolesovo, Lipetsk region. After school, he entered the Zadonsk Factory School, which today is the Zadonsk Polytechnic College.

During the Great Patriotic War, Mikhail Tikhonovich went through the combat path from an attack pilot to a squadron commander. He flew 234 combat missions.

“It is important to preserve the historical memory of the outstanding fellow countrymen of our region. Naming the institution after the twice Hero of the Soviet Union will help increase students’ interest in the history of our country and the patriotic education of the younger generation,” said regional council speaker Vladimir Serikov.
