On April 26, 2014, a hurricane hit Omsk, due to which Buchholz’s balloon almost rolled away. Omsk even gave a name to this element. The hurricane was named “Lyonya”. Today he turned 10 years old. Let’s remember how it was:
The Ob-Irtysh UGMS warned Omsk residents about bad weather in advance.
“Due to the passage of a deep active cyclone in the Omsk region, a dangerous meteorological phenomenon will be observed – very strong wind gusts of 24–29 m/s,” — meteorologists reported.
The hurricane began to rage in the morning and caused a lot of destruction. Due to strong winds in the village of Troitskoye along the Russko-Polyansky highway, a brick wall of a bus stop collapsed. A 23-year-old girl was waiting at the bus stop. She died from her injuries.
In total, 26 people went to hospitals in the region that day, of which 10 were hospitalized. Mostly people had cut wounds from shrapnel and bruises.
In 24 districts of the region, the wind damaged the roofs of 454 buildings, including 285 private houses. For example, the roof was torn off a house under construction on North 29th Street and it collapsed on a neighboring house. In Moskalenki, the roof of a house fell off and damaged two cars. In the village of Saratovo, Gorky district, 11 horses died under the rubble of reinforced concrete structures.
But the most memorable moment was when, due to a strong wind, the sculpture “Power” in the form of a ball on Buchholz Square rolled off its pedestal to a distance of about a meter. The city’s utilities had to hold him back. The ball was supported by a tractor, and subsequently strengthened on a pedestal.
It took nine days to eliminate all the consequences of the hurricane.
