In the Murmansk region, the second mate of the ship was convicted of violating safety rules, which resulted in the death of a person.

The Kola District Court of the Murmansk Region issued a verdict in a criminal case against the second mate of a dry cargo ship. He was found guilty of violating traffic safety rules and operating maritime transport, which negligently resulted in the death of a person.

“The court found that in May 2021, the second mate, while driving the bulk carrier Valery Kharlamov in the Barents Sea, violated safety rules and caused a collision with the small vessel ROTAN R 520,” said the North-Western Transport Prosecutor’s Office.

As a result of the incident, the navigator of the small vessel ended up in the water and died.
The man was sentenced to imprisonment for a period of 1 year 6 months. Based on Art. 53.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, imprisonment was replaced by forced labor for a period of 1 year 6 months with a monthly deduction of 10% from the wages of the convicted person to the state.
