Russians have shown maximum job satisfaction over the past 20 years

The All-Russian Center for Public Opinion Research (VTsIOM) asked Russians how much they liked their jobs. The results were encouraging: 84% said they were satisfied. This is the maximum since 2004. Sociologists explain this result by the improvement of working conditions and social protection of workers, the variability of career strategies, the growth of offers in the labor market and the willingness of Russians to change jobs more often in search of a better option.

15% of respondents are not satisfied with their work (20 years ago there were twice as many – 29%). The most dissatisfied people are among Russians with poor financial standing—46%, that is, almost every second person. Only 7% of the financially secure said that they did not like their work.

A higher level of education is also more likely to correlate with job satisfaction. The majority of those satisfied with their workplace are among Russians with incomplete higher or higher education—88%. Among citizens with incomplete secondary education, every third person is dissatisfied with their current job.

Dissatisfaction with work accumulates with age: 90% of young people aged 18–24 are satisfied with their work, while among Russians aged 60+ this is only 77%.

When choosing a job, Russians first look at the level of wages. But now this indicator prevails only among half of those surveyed, and 20 years ago this was the first thing three-quarters of citizens thought about. Another 31% of survey participants indicated that they pay attention to a convenient work schedule, and 17% – to the opportunity to establish good relationships with the team and management. “Such changes are likely the result of a two-way process: both people’s awareness of the importance of maintaining a balance between work and personal life, the value of the team atmosphere, and the employer’s awareness of the needs of their employees are growing. There is a growing understanding of the need to create a comfortable working environment and take into account the individual needs of employees,” note VTsIOM specialists.

The importance of opportunities for professional self-realization is noted by 28% of respondents; 26% – provision of a social package by the employer; 22% – good working conditions.

The list of such priorities indicates that in their work Russians strive for a combination of financial stability, psychological comfort, personal and career development and social security. At the same time, women value convenient hours and schedules, benefits packages, and the official nature of work more than men. And men more often look at the size of wages. Such differences are explained by the fact that women have to combine work with motherhood, so the opportunity to spend more time with children and go on sick leave is more important for them. Men in a traditional Russian family are often assigned the role of breadwinners, so it is more important for them to earn more.
