For the first time since the beginning of the Northern Military District, an airport opened in the region neighboring the Rostov region

Rostov region, April 26, 2024. DON24.RU. Elista International Airport, located in the Republic of Kalmykia, neighboring the Don region, will resume operations on May 3. This was reported in the telegram channel of the Federal Air Transport Agency.

Flights will operate daily from 09:00 to 19:00.

“The possibility of safe flights to the capital of Kalmykia has been confirmed by specialists from the Ministry of Defense, the Federal Air Transport Agency and the State ATM Corporation,” the statement said.

According to the Federal Air Transport Agency, the airfield’s capacity will be 12 takeoff and landing operations per hour. The entire airport infrastructure is in working order: major repairs were completed in the building in 2023.

Let us note that this is the first time that Elista airport will operate since the start of the special operation. Airports in the Krasnodar Territory and Rostov Region remain closed since February 2022.

As of today, Donetsk residents could fly from several nearby airports: Sochi, Mineralnye Vody and Volgograd. Now residents of the region will be able to use the airport in Elista: the distance to it will be 460 km.

Let us recall that in December 2023 it became known about the possible resumption of operation of the airport in Krasnodar. The decision was to be made based on the results of the test flight, which took place on December 15. However, it later became known that the Russian Ministry of Defense did not issue permission to open the airport in Krasnodar for civilian flights.

Russian President Vladimir Putin reported that the main criterion for opening airports in the south of the country would be ensuring the safety of passengers.
