Today a commemorative meeting was held in Orel dedicated to the 36th anniversary of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the largest disaster in the history of nuclear energy.
The Chernobyl accident required an unprecedented mobilization of forces and resources in peacetime. More than 30 thousand people were evacuated from a 30-kilometer zone around the station.
More than 600 thousand people from all over the Soviet Union took part in the work to eliminate the accident.
The Oryol region also took part in the liquidation of consequences at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. 323 Oryol residents received state awards for their dedication. People, at the cost of their lives and health, saved the world from a global environmental disaster.
