In Chelyabinsk, at the site of the United State Archive of the Chelyabinsk Region on Kirova Street, today, April 26, the grand opening of the exhibition “Orenburg Cossack Army. 450 years.”
The exhibition allows you to immerse yourself in the history of the South Ural Cossacks through rare archival documents and collectible photographs.
What already previously reported news agency “Ural-Press Inform”, a new exhibition telling about the 450-year history of the Orenburg Cossacks, consists of two parts. The first tells about the past of the Orenburg Cossack army, the second talks about the present of the South Ural Cossacks.
The opening ceremony of the exhibition was attended by the head of the public relations department of the government of the Chelyabinsk region Dmitry SemenovChairman of the State Committee for Regional Archives Sergey Ivanov, military ataman of the Orenburg Military Cossack Society (OVKO), Cossack general Vladimir Romanovhead of the department for work with the Cossacks of the Chelyabinsk diocese, priest Dmitry BaccaDirector of the State Institution “United State Archives of the Chelyabinsk Region” (OGACHO) Igor Vishev, as well as other archive employees, representatives of the Cossack community, and participants in patriotic youth organizations.
At the beginning of the opening ceremony, the choir of folk and Cossack songs from the House of Culture of the village of Travniki (Chebarkul district of the Chelyabinsk region) performed before the audience.
Opening the exhibition, the head of the department of publication and scientific use of documents of OGACHO Alexander Lymarev emphasized the importance of the Cossacks in the history of the Southern Urals.
“Cossacks participated in the construction of Chelyabinsk, Chebarkul, Miass, Verkhneuralsk, Troitsk and other fortresses. In wars XVIII – started XX For centuries, the Cossack class defended the borders of Russia. Only the Patriotic War of 1812 and the foreign campaigns of the Russian army gave our region the villages of Berlin, Leipzig, Ferchampenoise, Paris – the anniversary of the capture of which, by the way, was celebrated quite recently. The French writer Stendhal, who witnessed the arrival of the Cossacks in Paris, wrote the following: “The name of the Cossack resounded with horror for the French, and after their acquaintance in Paris they were revealed to them as heroes from ancient myths. They were pure like children and great like gods…” Our exhibition today is about these heroes from ancient myths…”, – said Alexander Lymarev.
The Cossacks did not remain only in the past, and today the history of the Orenburg Cossacks is worthily written by their descendants. The Cossack general spoke about the current situation in the territory entrusted to him at the opening of the exhibition. Vladimir Romanov.
“I would like to note and say that today’s Orenburg Cossack Army consists of five subjects of the Russian Federation. This is our Chelyabinsk region, the Sverdlovsk, Kurgan regions, the Orenburg region itself and the Republic of Bashkortostan. And who is most actively implementing the plan of events related to the celebration of the 450th anniversary is the Chelyabinsk region, and today’s event is far from the first in this series,” – emphasized Vladimir Romanov.
Not long ago, the Cossacks celebrated 210 years since the victorious entry into Paris (at that time such a settlement was only in France), and the Orenburg Cossack Army will celebrate its 450th anniversary on May 6th: this is the day of St. George the Victorious, the patron saint of the Orenburg Cossacks. In this regard, many words of gratitude were expressed to everyone who helped organize the historical exhibition, and some of those present received commemorative medals and letters of gratitude from the hands of the ataman of the Orenburg Military Cossack Society.
One of the recipients of the commemorative medal was the Deputy Director for Scientific Use of Documents of OGACHO Nikolay Antipin.
Nikolai Aleksandrovich gave a commentary on the opening exhibition especially for Ural-Press-Inform:
“The exhibition was prepared by the regional archive, but materials were used not only from the archive itself, but also from other institutions – because, unfortunately, we do not have many materials, photographs, and documents preserved. It is amazing! Cossack region, Chelyabinsk village – but during the Civil War, a lot died… We attracted the State Historical Museum of Moscow, we attracted our Historical Museum of the Southern Urals, the archive of the Sverdlovsk region, where there is a good collection of photographs, materials from the book “Cossack Village” by local historian Golubykh… In 1926, he photographed the Cossacks of the village of Timofeevsky, which is now Korkino… Good photographs came out, a good collection. So this exhibition was possible thanks to the community“, – said Nikolai Antipin.
After the opening ceremony, a tour of the exhibition was given by its curator, head of the exhibition work sector of OGACHO Egor Kazakov, who noted that although there are no photographs left of the very first Cossacks of the eighteenth century, evidence of the participation of the Cossacks in all major wars of the Russian Empire has been preserved. From the Russian-Turkish wars to the war with Japan and further until the present day, the path of the Orenburg Cossacks ran.
The last stands of the exhibition clearly confirm the participation of the South Ural villagers in a special military operation, and the latest photographs are dated April of this year: Cossacks take part in the construction of a dam near Kurgan, showing themselves in “People’s Day” in Chelyabinsk. Not necessarily in war, but always in the ranks, for more than four centuries the Orenburg Cossacks have been serving the Fatherland – and there is no translation for the Cossack family.
