38 years later: the feat of the liquidators of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was honored in Ulyanovsk

The largest accident in nuclear energy occurred on April 26, 1986 due to the destruction of the reactor of the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. In memory of this event, Ulyanovsk residents gathered at a requiem meeting at the monument “The Bell of Chernobyl Sounds in Our Hearts.” Together with the residents of the region, the Governor of the Ulyanovsk region, Alexey Russkikh, laid flowers.

“38 years ago there was a disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Today, together with the veteran liquidators of the accident, we honored the memory of the heroes. We discussed further equipment for the regional center for assistance to victims of radiation and occupational pathology, as well as perpetuating the memory of the participants in those events. Our social and medical services are faced with the task of surrounding veterans and their family members with attention and care,” said the head of the region.

To pay tribute to the memory, representatives of the regional government and the ZSO, as well as Ulyanovsk residents exposed to radiation, widows of the accident liquidators, representatives of public organizations and young people came to the monument.

Currently, there are 1,097 residents of the region who have been exposed to radiation – these are disabled people and participants in the Chernobyl disaster, liquidators of the consequences, and veterans at particular risk. On the eve of the memorable date, social protection specialists examined 1,347 liquidators and their widows.

In addition, in the Ulyanovsk region there is a museum dedicated to the feat of the liquidators of the accident, on the basis of the Ulyanovsk Regional Clinical Medical Center for providing assistance to persons affected by radiation exposure and professional pathology named after Hero of the Russian Federation V.M. Maksimchuk.

To create a museum fund, participants of those events, veterans of special risk units – testing sites, accident liquidators at nuclear facilities, participants in exercises using nuclear weapons, were brought into cooperation. About two thousand people visit the museum exhibition annually. Courage lessons are also held here.
